This video actually caused me to take a recap of the CSC bag by Incase. In all honesty I'm not even sure what took me so long to appreciate what they've done here and its actually safe to say that the Chrome Metropolis bag that was sure to be copped in the fall has just been replaced with a bag sure to be copped in mid summers stride.

Founded in 2002, the Chinatown Soccer Club is a crew of artists, photographers, designers, writers, skateboarders and like-minded creative individuals. Since then, the CSC has grown steadily, embracing friends and acquaintances from the downtown creative community. This diverse collective, united by a love for the game, converges on New York City's Chinatown year-round in all weather and seasons for friendly morning soccer matches before heading to work.

Maximum Garden House: Formwerkz Architects

A beautiful design of Maximum Garden House was made by Formwerkz. The design maximizes the area for garden, that usually doesn’t have enough area to be built.

The sloping roof terrace is derived from the staggered section of the house and retained a continuous flow from the indoor. This design can provide situation where we can sit or lie down and have conversation with others, just like in a park.

The plants can be set as a vertical wall planting on a niche along the front boundary wall. The shrubbery is set on the car-porch roof, reclaim surfaces otherwise normally neglected as canvasses for beautification.

Through his more than 40 years of work at Braun, Dieter Rams designed anything from hair dryers, cigarette lighters, loudspeakers, radios and radio-phonographs to clocks and watches. That is because he you know him as the illustrator of the brilliant Art Space Tokyo, by Ashley Rawlings and Craig Mod.
The calendar is on sale at Cibone for 2,300 yen.

In a somewhat synesthesis sort of way (assuming synesthesis is a word), the calenders remind me of the Pop Ambient series. I'll let you decide.

Wasn't long ago we were admiring the CB1100 concept and hoping that Honda wasn't just prick teasing, but would actually start producing a modern retro styled CB. Well, they have finally confirmed production in 2010. No exact dates or pricing confirmed but we hope they price this bike competitively. If it is a success we would love to see Honda starts making many other retro styled bikes including a CB750. The red CB1100 pictured has been slightly customized with a cafe racer styled seat, fairing and black powder coated pipes. Just gives you a taste of what can be achieved. Can't wait to see these bikes fully customized by the public.

San Francisco tech geeks Regen are introducing new ways to integrate sustainability with portability.

That's the ReNu, a portable solar panel designed for the mass market, for powering personal electronics like iPhones, music players, and desk lamps due to hit the shelves in June 2010. Reena Jana interviews Robert Brunner, Chief Designer on his tactics, and he shares 3 tips for innovation. Here's a snippet,

But they didn't ask them what they wanted in such products. They asked them more broadly about their experiences in conserving power.
Friends told them about the situations when they were acutely aware of power supply. For example, "when they used their laptops on planes, they started looking at power differently," Brunner said. "They paid more attention to the battery symbol on their screens." An investor had his own moments of not taking energy for granted: "He said he is most aware of power sources is when he is sailing," Thinking of such moments when people are focused on energy use, ReGen's designers paid particular attention to their products' charge-level displays, making them eye-catching and easy-to-interpret. By putting usage on display, the unobtrusive interface influences consumers' energy consumption habits with everyday home gadgets, and is hailed as one of ReNu's most innovative features.

It was being acutely aware of power shortages after his recent move to Kenya from Florida, that led Erik Hersman to uncover some solar powered alternatives available in the local market.

Regen’s iPod Dock and Renu Solar Panel will ship next February for $249, while the Sound Dock will ship April 2010 for $149 (that price doesn’t include the $199 Renu Solar Panel).

‘BUMPS in Beijing’ is an integrated project with four residences as well as a commercial building. The traditional residence buildings in China are oriented south and north. With the increase in the density of the buildings, the traditional method causes buildings too close to each other and the rooms facing to the north can hardly get sunshine.

‘BUMPS in Beijing’ is rotated by 45 degrees from the north-south axis. This design can provide optimum sunshine for each building and also can short cut the way to the central business areas from different directions.

The residence buildings are 80 meters height. Every two floors are set as a unit. Every unit is staggered by 2 meters horizontally. Whole 80m’s building is repetitions of these units. The setback areas are used for terraces. Interlaced black and white units highlight the concave-convex façade and show a clear lineament of the building. All the windows are 1 meter square. Randomly placed windows weaken the existence of all pillars and beams. Therefore, the appearance of the buildings look like stacked by lots of small black and white ‘boxes’ together.

The Jazz Loft Project

From 1957-1965 W. Eugene Smith, a prolific American photographer, documented New York jazz musicians in his small loft and ended up with 4,000 hours of audio and 40,000 photographs. His dilapidated loft in the wholesale flower district was the place for late-night jam sessions for Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Steve Reich, Zoot Sims, Roland Kirk, and Alice Coltrane. He also recorded drug addicts, neighborhood cops, radio programs about aliens, MLK and JFK on the radio, James Baldwin and Frank Lloyd Wright in interviews. When Smith died, he accumulated 1,740 reels of tape. Below are some of his photos from his collection.

The Jazz Loft Project has done a great job archiving and sharing this extraordinary moment in American history. WNYC radio did a ten-part series telling the story of W. Eugene Smith and the jazz loft with rare recordings and intriguing stories from friends and family. NPR just started a four-part series on the jazz loft and will continue to air stories every Sunday in December.

Charles Eames 'What Is Design' interview.

What exactly is 'Good Design'? I'm having the hardest time finding an honest answer to this question. It was while visiting Smart Furniture on the North Shore that this ever perplexing notion began making its way to the forefront of my mind. I honestly think it had something to do with the Eames Lounge Chair that they feature. The chair of course was absolutely amazing, but there was just something about the $3600 price tag that I just couldn't dig. I couldn't for the life of me understand why the chair was so expensive, I still can't for that matter, but one thing I do know about the chair is that its held as somewhat of an archetype of this more and more seemingly ideal notion of 'Good Design'. This next statement many may disagree with and I may even lose some readers but 'it is what it is'. An object is not 'Good Design' if it is not accessible. Of course 'accessible' is an extremely vague term, and you may be asking "What exactly constitutes as accessible?" I'm using this term to more or less signify how the general population would view the product. But on that note, I'm gonna leave you to fend for yourselves in this debate as I turn it over to a man who changed the face of design and coincidentally designed that chair, Mr Charles Eames.

What is Good Design?

What is your definition of “design?”
A plan for arranging elements in such a way as to best accomplish a particular purpose.

Is design an expression of art (an art form)?
The design is an expression of the purpose. It may (if it is good enough) later be judged as art.

Is design a craft for industrial purposes?
No— but design may be a solution to some industrial problems.

What are the boundaries of design?
What are the boundaries of problems?

Is design a discipline that concerns itself with only one part of the environment?
No.

It is a method of general expression?
No— it is a method of action.

Is design a creation of an individual?
No— because to be realistic one must always admit the influence of those who have gone before.

...or a creation of a group?
Often.

Is there a design ethic?
There are always design constraints and these usually include an ethic.

Does design imply the idea of products that are necessarily useful?
Yes— even though the use might be surely subtle.

It is able to cooperate in the creation of works reserved solely for pleasure?
Who would say that pleasure is not useful?

Ought form to derive from the analysis of function?
The great risk here is that the analysis may not be complete.

Can the computer substitute for the designer?
Probably, in some special cases, but usually the computer is an aid to the designer.

Does design imply industrial manufacture?
Some designs do and some do not—depending on the nature of the design and the requirements.

Is design an element of industrial policy?
A.Certainly; as in any other aspect of quality, obvious or subtle, of the product. It seems that anything can be an element in policy.

Ought design to care about lowering costs?
A product often becomes more useful if the costs are lowered without harming the quality.

Does the creation of design admit constraint?
Design depends largely on constraints.

What constraints?
The sum of all constraints. Here is one of the few effective keys to the design problem—the ability of the designer to recognize as many of the constraint as possible—his willingness and enthusiasm for working within these constraints—the constraints of price, of size, of strength, balance, of surface, of time, etc.; each problem has its own peculiar list.

Does design obey laws?
Aren’t constraints enough?

Ought the final product to bear the trademark of the designer? Of the research office?
In some cases, one may seem appropriate. In some cases, the other, and certainly in some cases both.

What is the relation of design to the world of fashion (current trends)?
The objects of fashion have usually been designed with the particular constraints of fashion in mind.

Is design ephemeral?
Some needs are ephemeral. Most designs are ephemeral.

Ought it to tend towards the ephemeral or towards permanence?
Those needs and designs that have a more universal quality will tend toward permanence.

To whom does design address itself: to the greatest number (the masses)? to the specialists or the enlightened amateur? To a privileged social class?
To the need.

Can public action aid the advancement of design?
The proper public action can advance most anything.

After having answered all these questions, do you feel you have been able to practice the profession of “design” under satisfactory conditions, or even optimum conditions?
Yes.

Have you been forced to accept compromises?
I have never been forced to accept compromises but y have willingly accepted constraints.
What do you feel is the primary condition for the practice of design and its propagation?
Recognition of the need.

What is the future of design?
(No answer)

Needless to say I'm even more on the fence than before. This article featured in the New York Times doesn't help much either. As this is, was, and will probably always be a heated debate, I definitely want to hear your opinions. So please, enlighten me.

If you don't know by now, design bible I.D. has ceased publication for reasons that are still somewhat unknown. In all complete honesty, I feel somewhat responsible for this in a minuscule blade of grass kind of way. In some of those reasons hyperlinked above, there is some talk about how blogs are having a huge influence on print, and as much as I hate to admit it, this is probably one such blog. Even the mere notion of the thought causes me to bare some guilt as I.D. magazine was probably the first product design magazine I ever picked up. It was actually picked upon accident as I meant to order i-d magazine, as soon as I began flipping through the pages of this wonderful mishap, I was hooked. I still have my first issue on my bookshelf, it was the January 1, 2008 issue featuring a spread on 40 Amazing-Looking Design Offices. The same thing happened when I picked up the January 1, 2007 issue of Dwell that someone had left in the local library where I worked. I was experiencing something so completely outside of what I was used to that caused me to stay up late nights and ponder about how the structures we lived in effected how we lived while leaving footprints on our lives. I.D. was the same way. I wanted to transform everything around me, every single item I came in contact with, into something more 'intelligent' than what it was. I felt as if this was may of making the world around me a better place. After all, thats one of the primary functions of this blog, to report on various ways people around the world are changing their everyday environments for the greater. Perhaps its a bit farfetched, but I'm only doing what i'd imagine the creators of I.D. were doing during it inception in 1954, so the thought of me edging on its demise is rather perplexing. Though I have to be honest and say that perhaps part of the reason I.D. failed has something to do with the price. $7.99 before tax is actually a pretty good deal when it comes to Design magazine, especially architecture magazines. This being said. the fact that they meet their demise when the internet starts rapping its mind around what exactly good design constitutes, isn't really that surprising. So after all of this and a bit of pondering, I'm not sure whats going to happen next. Maybe(but not hopefully) design magazines will just have to start cutting back on the quality to help alter prices. Though something tells me that design magazines and their readers dig a little bit of that elitism. I'm just not sure anymore, lemme know what you think.

Tayson House in Bradford / UK by Kraus Schönberg Architects

The Constance and London based Kraus Schönberg Architects realised this new built extension of a Victorian warehouse building in ‘Little Germany’, a particular historical area in in central Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Here is what the architects expalin:
“The formation of Bradford’s Little Germany took place in various stages. This can be seen in the different sizes of the warehouses.
Starting with two to three storey buildings in the early 1830s, the trend changed towards grander structures in the late 1850s. Tayson House was built around 1870 and it’s four floors have a two storey neighbour.”

“The new infill structure tries to mediate between the two historical buildings, making a clear statement in its own time – the present.
The new extension is hung from a steel frame creating a minimal interface with the existing buildings. By creating its own architectural language the glass, galvanised steel and timber structure can be seen as a separate entity. This allows a continuation of the industrial character of Little Germany and helps regenerating the area.”

Africa in words designed by Skyler Vander Molen and Global Peace Exchange. Global Peace Exchange is a student founded and run non-profit begun at Florida State University. In 2008, GPE took a team of 20 volunteers to Rwanda to help build an IT school and teach English. As a volunteer, it was his duty to help raise money for the trip. As part of his contribution, Molen designed a t-shirt to raise awareness about Africa as well as raise money. I highly reccomend visiting Skyler's blog, his work is nothing short of awesome.

So its finals week and per usual instead of attempting to cram half a semesters work into one week, I'm on the computer, playing the conga, and thinking of random lost scenarios more than ever. One such scenario serves as somewhat of a Marvel Comics 'What If', like what if instead of a physicist, Einstein had been some sort of corporate entrepreneur, or perhaps if the late great Michael Jackson had become a children's book writer and illustrator or if Beethoven had perhaps picked up a paint brush instead. Then it hit me, some people are just born to do what they do, and needless to say, they do it well. One such person is a young Atlanta inhabitant known simply as Yokoo.

When I see her work, the word 'genius' comes to mind, but then I get hung up wishing there was another word beyond genius I could use to describe Yokoo's knittery. She's got a spot in the New York times, and can even be found at Urban Outfitters. Though in all honesty, I really dont know too much about Yokoo, but in this case, that serves as a good thing because its her work that does all the talking, and on that note, I'm gonna stop talking and let Yokoo's work cut in.

Philco Pc : "So everybody's going retro right?"

Johnny Ive isn't the only one creating amazing products rooted in vintage design nostalgia. SchultzeWORKS designstudio has cooked up this incredible homage to vintage Philco Design(particularly the year1954) while also creating an epithet of modern design at the same time. Though it just a concept, if the Philco PC ever does go into production, Ive might have a run for his money.

The client’s wishes regarding the design of her new apartment were clear and simple: it should be similar to the design of her architect’s apartment – spacious, open, flooded with light and white. Accordingly, the colour “WHITE” became the determining feature of the interior design concept.

The apartment is on one of the upper floors of a residential building in the east of Graz, which was designed by an architect. The apartment offers qualities like proximity to the city centre, lots of light, communicative access balconies with private patios, spacious balconies and a clear and simple floor plan.

The only materials used were glass, white furniture fronts, textiles and gravel in the form of smooth uninterrupted floor covering, which emphasizes the open floor plan. The glass was partly imprinted with pictures of the client, thereby adding a lively touch. The same white fronts were used on all furniture, which was made by a cabinet-maker. Only some fronts and niches were covered with soft furry textiles, which, together with white curtains, add a soft and cozy touch to the otherwise purist design.

Jane Austin book covers by Vintage Classics

So I'm gonna be honest, I've never read a Jane Austin novel.....Ever! Ive heard how great she was from friends and family, but there was just something about a book called Sense and Sensibility that never really drew me in. Though that was the past, and I'm going to assume that it was the 'packaging' that threw me off, that is until now.

The series is called Vintage Austin and is published by and available at Random House. I have to say that even though Emma is my favorite cover, I think each and every one is pretty amazing and extremely poster worthy.

Needless to say, I will most definitely be copping Sense and Sensibility whilst still judging books by their covers. It's only natural right?

Harajuku meets Godiva aka Cos heaven

New Godiva store in Harajuku. In my opinion the Japanese have done it once again. Their ability to create a commercial space that could by no means be described as 'tacky' has puzzled me for years.

In Tokyo half the fun in buying something seems to be the experience of being the consumer. This is no different. In all honesty, I'd glady drop $8 on a chocolate bar to see something like this.

And Bill would probably gladly sell his soul.
